Paul and Paul Complete POTA Activation
A POTA Activation.
On Thursday morning, Paul M0PJA and Paul G8NRY completed a Parks on the Air (POTA) activation of Thrybergh County Park G-0441, Near Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
The name Thrybergh is believed to come from the Anglo-Saxon TRI = meaning three BERGA meaning wood on three hills.
Anyway, the site is based around the former reservoir and is looked after by Rotherham MBC.
Working conditions were:
A Yaesu FT-897, for 2m an N30 and for HF Ham Pro sticks for 40m and 20m
The aim was to try and activate the site using 2m and then move onto HF, while we were both able to activate the site due to time restrictions we only managed to operate on 2m FM.
Despite the overnight and early rain, the activation was enjoyable, as were the Bacon Bread Cakes and Coffee from the local on-site Cafe.
We are already planning our next POTA activation.
Why Take Part in Parks on the Air (POTA)?
Parks on the Air (POTA) is an exciting amateur radio program that encourages operators to set up and transmit from parks, nature reserves, and other designated outdoor locations. Whether you’re an experienced radio enthusiast or a newcomer to the hobby, POTA offers a unique and rewarding way to engage with amateur radio while enjoying the great outdoors.
One of the main reasons to participate in POTA is the opportunity to combine radio with adventure. Activating a park allows operators to escape the usual indoor shack setup and embrace nature while making radio contacts. It also provides a great reason to explore new locations, discover scenic landscapes, and enjoy fresh air and exercise.
POTA is also an excellent way to improve radio skills. Operating in remote locations challenges operators to set up efficient antennas, manage power sources, and deal with varying propagation conditions. This helps build confidence in emergency preparedness and portable operations.
The program fosters a strong sense of community among radio amateurs. Hunters (those contacting activators in parks) and activators alike work together, often forming lasting friendships through shared experiences. POTA awards and leaderboards add an element of friendly competition, motivating participants to push their limits.
Ultimately, POTA combines the joy of amateur radio with the beauty of nature, making it an engaging and fulfilling activity for operators of all skill levels. Whether for fun, skill-building, or emergency readiness, taking part in POTA is a fantastic way to enjoy radio in a whole new way.
